Matariki 2018

New in my classroom this year:

  1. Added specific Matariki posters to the windows and door.
  2. Greeted my students in Maori all week.
  3. Promoted discussions about celebrating Matariki with all students.

Generally:

  1. Take an interest in my Maori and Pasifika students. Find out what languages they speak. Try to greet them in their own languages.
  2. Engage my year 7 and 8 students in comparing languages to Spanish eg Maori greetings, colours and ‘how are you?’

Next steps:

  1. Use the Maori app more to learn vocabulary.
  2. Will follow Maori course at Marae in 2019.
  3. Talk to colleagues who have recently completed an online Maori course.
